It was 60 degrees in northern New Jersey today. The sun was shining and the opportunity to spend the day outside couldn’t be missed. We spent the afternoon at the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, and while a few of the attractions were closed for the season, the animals were all taking advantage of the relief from the frigid temperatures earlier this week.

Turtle Back has gone through a major transformation over the past decade. It isn’t the shoddy, poorly maintained sadness inducing zoo I grew up with. Now it is a small gem in the midst of one of the most densely populated counties in the most densely populated state.

As this new year begins, and people look for fresh starts and clean slates, it seems appropriate to have spent the day at a place that, for years, fought itself to prevent irrevocable deterioration. This year, while I too look for opportunities to affect positive change, I hope to remember that true, real and effective change takes time and perseverevence.

The platform, mConnect, comes as textbook publishers are jockeying to supply learning materials on digital devices. If the software is successful in India, McGraw-Hill plans to offer it in other developing countries in Asia and Africa.

The service will initially teach subscribers through text messaging and automated voice response, said Bruce D. Marcus, McGraw-Hill’s executive vice president. For instance, automated software will give Indians feedback on their English-speaking abilities, and a text-message service will offer test-preparation questions and grade the responses.

A bit late to posting this or, well, anything lately.

What’s smart about this is the simplicity. Since SMS is the lowest common denominator, all students will be able to use the system regardless of device or carrier, and it can be ported to many other educational settings, schools, networks and so forth.

Of course, since it is not an “app,” is not called iConnect and doesn’t appear to have a little green robot mascot, it hasn’t garnered much attention here in the States.

But some college professors and administrators are more excited about Wave’s potential to be a course-management-system killer.

“Just from the initial look I think it will have all the features (and then some) for an all-in-one software platform for the classroom and beyond,” wrote Steve Bragaw, a professor of American politics at Sweet Briar College, on his blog last week.

Mr. Bragaw admits he hasn’t used Google Wave himself — so far the company has only granted about 100,000 beta testers access to the system. Each of those users is allowed to invite about eight friends (who can each invite eight more), so the party is slowly growing louder while many are left outside waiting behind a virtual velvet rope. But Google has posted an hour-long video demonstration of the system that drew quite a buzz when it was unveiled in May. That has sparked speculation of how Wave might be used.

More hype for a product that hasn’t been made publicly available yet. It amazes me that conjecture on the potential of how a product might be used, theroretically, is enough to promote it as a game changer.

I’m not arguing that Google Wave doesn’t have that potential, it very well may. I have yet to receive an invitation, and as a result, I am in no position to make claims about its potential.

From my experience working with Faculty on online course development, as well as with technology for its purposeful uses in the classroom and for hybrid and online learning, it seems to me that this is a few years off. Strategies for best practices, management, support, training and then managing the culture shift for faculty and students alike will need to be planned, piloted and investigated before we dub Google Wave a “Course Management System” killer.
